; 100k in loans. In the old days a college degree virtually guaranteed a good paying job because the degree was scarce. With the number of college graduates increasing each year the kind of jobs they are getting are not nearly as lucrative to be able to pay back loans. The argument is not if we should have private vs public lending. More appropriat ely, should we have lending at all? It sounds terrible but if these colleges knew that they had to compete for your hard earned dollar they wouldnt hike tuitions so readily. And if people had to pay their own way they would also think twice about a high-price d instututio n vs a good local institutio n or community college. You would also weed out the kids who may just want to have 4/5 yr boozefest instead of wanting to learn. Just my opinion. I know that fans ofHuffPo may not necessaril y agree with this but I am curious to read others opinions.The logic is sound... but I dont think it will be good enough to push prices down enough for poorer students. Its especially bad since most of education is paid by parents not students in these cases, leading to thesins of the fathers problem. I think what would most likely occur is universiti es becoming elites-onl y institutio ns, and since prestige of university is a major facto in job availabili ty and networking , this becomes important even if local universiti es and community colleges are available and local universiti es arent really that cheap... its just the savings on out-...[more]
